Third public meeting to discuss Central Library and Graves Art Gallery — Central Sheffield

20 Dec

A third public meeting has been planned to update people about the proposals for Sheffield’s Central Library and Graves Art Gallery.

This is a repeat of the public meeting first held on Tuesday, 6 December at the Town Hall. It follows Sheffield City Council’s announcement that, as part of the city’s partnership with Chinese construction company Sichuan Guodong Group, the company is looking at the feasibility of using the current Central Library building to develop the city’s first five star hotel, which would see the Central Library moved to another site in the city centre. There is a commitment to maintaining the art gallery with full public access, if the option of using the library building to develop a hotel becomes viable.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, 5 January, from 7pm to 9pm at the Town Hall. Spaces can be booked online.

The same presentation and information is being given at all public meetings and is available atwww.sheffield.gov.uk/libraries.

Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Libraries at Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re putting on another public meeting to let people know where we’re at with the proposals for the library. It’s great that so many people want to be involved and shows the passion we have for our libraries here in Sheffield.”

Activity Sheffield – Proposed changes to the current service

Sheffield City Council continues to face significant financial challenges as the Government further reduces its grant to the local authority. Extremely difficult decisions have had to be made over the past six years about services that the people of Sheffield care so much about.

Sadly due to the necessity for further cuts in the coming year, Activity Sheffield in its current form is no longer financially viable. More information is available on the website below:

You can provide feedback by contacting Activity Sheffield through letter to; Jo Pearce, Activity Sheffield, Moorfoot Building, Sheffield S1 4PL, alternatively you can email jo.pearce@sheffield.gov.uk.  Please note that the deadline for them to receive your feedback is Friday 23 December 2016.

Walking to School Project

In June 2016 we launched a project encouraging children and adults to travel more actively to and from school.

With the assistance of Inmotion!, Sheffield International Venues, British Orienteering, Artboat and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust- pupils from Malin Bridge Primary, Hillsborough Primary, Sacred Heart Primary, and Hinde House Primary have taken part in a variety of fun and interactive activities designed to encourage children to think positively about walking.

Activities have included urban nature walks through the Rivelin Valley, magnificent art pieces created with ‘Artboat’ and orienteering challenges in Hillsborough Park. Likewise consultation with parents has helped create sustainable walking buses and encourage positive behaviour changes.

Over 300 pupils aged between 5 and 11 years old have been engaged so far and consultation results show a positive impact on the amount of people walking!

Consultations on Children’s Surgery and Hyper Acute Stroke services across South Yorkshire

13 Dec

South East Sheffield

Have Your Say on Children’s Surgery and Hyper Acute Stroke Services.

People living in Barnsley, Bassetlaw, Chesterfield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield and Wakefield are being invited to share their thoughts on proposals to change our region’s services for:

  • Children’s surgery and anaesthesia
  • Hyper acute stroke, where patients are treated and given care for up to the first 72 hours after having a stroke.

Depending on where you live, some patients have better experiences and access to services than others – and doctors, nurses and healthcare experts all agreed that this shouldn’t happen – and have come together to change it.

Between Monday 3 October 2016 and Friday 20 January 2017, members of the public are invited to share their views on the proposed option for the future of these services – with a final decision expected to be made by clinical commissioners in February.

Update on Central Library Public Meetings

12 Dec

Sheffield City Council has promised that there will always be a Central Library in the city centre. Earlier this week two public meetings were held about proposals for the Central Library and Graves Art Gallery. The meetings saw more than 200 people discuss how the council is considering leasing the Surrey Street building to create the city’s first five star hotel.

The other promises made, should the deal go ahead, were:

  • Not to explore a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) arrangement to finance any new Central Library building.
  • To protect the existing building through a ‘triple lock’ of planning law, listing requirements and controls.
  • A new Graves Art Gallery in the existing building, guaranteeing public access for future generations.

You can find out more, and book onto future events here:  www.sheffield.gov.uk/libraries

Health & Wellbeing Programme – Just for Girls (Gleadless Valley)

12 Dec

RSS -sorted.jpg

Following a local consultation with young people (as part of Reach South Sheffield’s ongoing young person’s service SORTED) feedback showed that there is a distinct lack of services specifically for young woman in the Gleadless Valley area.   As a result we have developed a Health & Wellbeing programme called “Just for Girls”.

We have designed a rolling programme that involves a number of local delivery partners specialising in the health & wellbeing of young people.  We wanted to develop a range of workshops that offer a totally holistic approach to supporting the personal development of young woman engaging individuals at an early age, when they are particularly vulnerable and impressionable.  The overall aim of this programme is to support the development of self-belief; self-esteem and improve positivity & confidence, as well as incorporating a range of sessions that will promote good health and help to build positive habits and behaviours.  All of this will hopefully help to prepare our young woman and combat some of the fears, concerns and barriers that they are currently experiencing.

Please pass this on to anyone who you think would like to attend!
