On-call Firefighter Recruitment

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service are currently accepting applications for the position of On-Call Firefighter at the following Fire Stations across South Yorkshire:

http://www.syfire.gov.uk/find-a-job/firefighter-recruitment/call-firefighter-recruitment

Postcode      (check out the Footprint of Eligible on their webpage
Askern               DN6 0JX
Birley                 S20 5FA
Penistone         S36 6HN
Stocksbridge   S36 1DH
Rossington       DN11 0PQ

Dearne               S63 5DN

An ‘on-call’ or ‘part-time’ firefighter responds to the same fire and emergency calls using the same fire engines and equipment as a full-time firefighter. The only difference is that on-call firefighters are on-call at home or at work rather than permanently based at a fire station. The role offers flexible working hours and suits people with childcare commitments and other responsibilities.

As an on-call firefighter you would be paid a retaining fee along with an additional payment for every incident you attend. You would also be required to attend several hours of training every week, for which a payment is also made.

Being an on-call firefighter is like having a part-time job – you have to commit to certain hours and you get paid for them.

Could I be an On-call Firefighter?

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue currently has on-call firefighters from a wide range of backgrounds and employment situations, including self-employed people, people with jobs at local businesses and people who are on-call during daytime hours while their children are at school.

Eligibility

Applicants must be able to comply with the following eligibility criteria:

  • be eligible to work in the United Kingdom
  • be 18 years of age by the time your training course starts
  • be able to attend one of the above Fire Stations within 5 minutes, travelling at normal road speeds (full postcodes & footprints of eligible areas are above)
  • have a basic swimming ability and water confidence which will enable you to operate safely in water rescue situations
  • be physically fit to meet the requirements of the role and medical examination
  • be able to demonstrate reading, writing and numerical skills to meet the requirements of the role
  • You must also be committed to maintaining and developing new skills, and studying on top of your normal working days.

Pay

On-call Firefighters receive an annual retaining fee of £2,202, (rising to £2,935, when competent) plus an hourly rate of £10.05 (rising to £13.40, when competent) for actual work & training and any other payments as relevant.

Further information, including everything you need to know about eligibility, the various recruitment stages, salary and the duties that make up this role, is available in the On-call Candidate Pack below.

Integrated Commissioning Programme

ICP pic

The Sheffield Integrated Commissioning Programme (ICP) is part of the NHS England Pioneer Programme.

As part of the programme, we are developing and testing new and different ways of joining up health and social care services. Our aim is to improve the quality of effectiveness of services.

Kim, a Community Support Worker for Sheffield City Council took part in the Pioneer Programme Annual Report, with her patient, John, she highlights what happens when the needs of people are placed first. The remarkable work that Kim does on a daily basis highlights how the ICP is making a difference in Sheffield.

John moved back to the UK from South Africa two years ago, seven years ago he had a back operation that went wrong. John now suffers from neuropathy in the legs and feet which means John has total numbness from the knees down, he is in constant pain.

Since being introduced to Kim, John’s life has changed for the better.

See John’s story here: https://vimeo.com/152290862.
